Mi Video
Using the video Maribel made in the fotonovela as your guide write a script for your own video introducing yourself and your friends as well as showing off your hometown to a host family in Spain.
Start by saying hello
Than you must state the following:
Your name
Your age
What country you plan to travel to
What town you live in
What your town is like (Use adjectives to describe it)
Two places in your town, or fairly close, you love going to. Describe them.
The names of a friend and a description of his/her physical appearance as well as his/her personality
Two things you do with your friends.
The name of a family member or a second friend and a description of his/her physical appearance as well as his/her personality. Include one thing you love to do with them.
End the video by asking your host family:
what they are like
what they like to do.
Say goodbye
You have a choice of pre-recording your video at home and either having the entire class watch it or having me just grade it outside of class. Your other option is to film the video in class but you just get 2 takes.

What do you know about "it"?

Sep 1, 2006
This course is open to eighth graders and stresses understanding and speaking the Spanish language. The 8th grade year of study culminates in the University of the State of New York's Second Language Proficiency Examination. The examination is mandated by the New York State Education Department and is part of the requirements for a New York State High School Diploma. The goals of the program are based on the New York State Syllabus: Learning Standards for Languages other than English, Modern Languages for Communication which addresses the needs of today’s students preparing to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century.
The class will primarily be held in Spanish. The communicative curriculum emphasizes four essential functions of language: socializing; providing and obtaining information; expressing personal feelings; and getting others to adopt a course of action. Functions like language structures, vocabulary, and culture are embedded in context.
The goal of this course is an increased comfort in using Spanish as a primary means of communication. Students will learn to develop increasingly complex language structures and vocabulary needed to function within a variety of topics. They will be able to discuss events that happened in the past as well as those currently in progress and make plans for the future.
A
Use of a three ring binder with 3 dividers (Handouts, Notes and Homework) is required. Formal notes will be given in class and students are expected to record notes on grammar, vocabulary, and culture. Arrive prepared. Everyday you should bring your binder with paper, homework, and a pen and a pencil.
B
Packets of practice and activity work sheets plus other printed material are distributed in class for each chapter. Students will need a separate folder within the three ring binder to store this printed material. Packets from completed chapters are useful for review and should be stored at home in a separate folder.
C
Each student will be called upon each day to do some type of oral work. An important part of the student’s grade comes from daily participation.
D.
Remember that this is a new language to most of us. Be patient and helpful to your classmates and be tolerant of one another.
E.
Speak as often as possible in class; it leads to fluency.
F
Do all assignments; they lead to mastery.
G.
All exams and assignments missed due to a legal absence must be made up within a week after the student returns to class.
J.
Always remember what we are here for -- the acquisition of a useful, satisfying, lifetime skill. Try to use your class time wisely. Everyone can learn a new language. There will come a day when you will be glad you did.
Textbook: Ven Conmigo 2, Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 1999
Audio and Video Program: Taped entirely on location in Spanish-speaking regions provides a linguistically authentic and culturally rich video.
Grammar and Vocabulary Workbook and Practice and Activity Book: augments instruction with carefully structured exercises.
Communicative Activities: provide oral classroom activities for paired and group practice.
4. HOMEWORK POLICY
The primary purpose for assigning homework is to give the student additional practice in developing his/her language competence. It obviously takes more time to learn a foreign language than the 40 minutes available in the daily school schedule. It should be stressed that homework always bears directly on the next day’s class and is an integral part of the student’s daily responsibility. Consequently, late assignments are not accepted for credit. Considering that emergencies do arise each student is granted three free homework passes a quarter. After an extended illness, a conference with guidance and student is warranted to set reasonable expectations. Homework is assigned Monday-Thursday and should take an average student 20 to 30 minutes. Student work should reflect their best effort. It should be neat and labeled with a proper heading. Any other work will not receive full credit. It is your responsibility to find out what you missed and to make arrangements with the teacher to make up the work.
5. EXAMINATION POLICY
- Regular quizzes: oral, written and listening.
- Chapter tests
- Oral work (recitation, class participation, presentations)
6. GRADING POLICY
The student’s grade will be weighted in the following ways:
50% Quizzes 20% Tests
10% Homework 10% Project(s) 10% Participation
The final examination will count as one-fifth of the year’s average.
Plagiarism and “cheating, including but not limited to representing someone else’s work as one’s own; using unauthorized oral and written assistance for a quiz, test or other assignment; illegally obtaining tests in advance, knowingly providing another student with the opportunity to cheat and other forms of unauthorized collusion” will not be tolerated. (North Salem School District Code of Conduct, 2002) Copying homework from a friend and/or using a translating site on the web or from other sources are also considered forms of cheating. They too will result in an automatic zero.
7. ATTENDANCE
Attendance is essential for progress in this class. After an extended absence due to illness there will be one calendar week allowed to make up all tests, quizzes, and homework. Make an appointment for make ups as soon as you return to school from your illness. There is no make up for illegal absences. For extended absences due to trips and/or vacations, all work must be done PRIOR to the trip. Extended illness warrants a conference with guidance and student to set reasonable expectations.
8. TARDINESS
Each student is expected to be on time for class. Lateness to class disrupts students and teacher alike. Detention will be the result after 3 tardies.
9. EXTRA HELP DAYS AND LOCATION
Extra-help is available every Wednesday and Thursday from 2:15 – 2:55 p.m. in room
E-217.
